ABSTRACT In the process of architectural design, architects are often subject to various restrictions of indices and
provisions of urban planning, and at the same time there is significant gap between the macroscopic scale of urban
planning and the microscopic scale of architecture. Architects need to find a way for such a connection. Five Japanese
architects who won the Pritzker Award made an active response in resolving macroscopic problems in city development
and provided an effective solution for the connection between city and architecture. The urban perspective helped them
find a basis in architectural design, and furthermore also provided a useful reference and feedback for urban planning
at the macroscopic scale.
